Lassen College baseball put together one of its most complete weekends of the season, sweeping Redwoods behind explosive offense, dominant pitching, and clutch late-game execution. Across the three-game set, the Cougars outscored Redwoods 29-8 while showcasing the depth that has made Lassen one of the toughest teams in conference play. Big performances from stars like Sam Moore, Jackson Rosenthal, Kylan Kono, and Jack Zimmerman powered the offense, while the pitching staff consistently controlled the pace of the series.
Game 1: Cougars Explode Early in 9-1 Rout
Lassen wasted no time setting the tone in Friday’s opener, erupting for six runs in the first inning on the way to a commanding 9-1 victory. The Cougars pounded out 13 hits and played flawless defense behind a dominant outing from Caden Fowler, who struck out nine over six shutout innings while allowing just two hits. Lassen controlled every phase of the game from the opening pitch and never allowed Redwoods to settle in.
Sam Moore delivered one of the biggest performances of the weekend, finishing 3-for-5 with a triple, a home run, and four RBIs. Kylan Kono added three hits and two runs scored, while Jack Zimmerman collected two hits and scored twice at the top of the lineup. Jackson Rosenthal chipped in a two-run single during the explosive first inning that immediately gave the Cougars momentum.
Lassen’s lineup continued to pressure Redwoods throughout the afternoon. Ethan Beede and Hayden Pietras each drove in runs, while Damico Parker added two hits and aggressive baserunning. The Cougars built their lead methodically before Moore slammed the door with a two-run homer in the sixth inning to make it 9-0.
The pitching staff matched the offense’s energy from start to finish. Fowler dominated early before Freeman Rountree and Tyler Chisa closed out the final innings. Lassen struck out 11 Redwoods hitters overall while committing zero errors defensively, putting together one of the cleanest all-around games of the season.
Game 2: Lassen Walks Off Redwoods in Thriller
The second game of the doubleheader delivered late drama, and once again the Cougars found a way to come out on top. Lassen rallied late for a 3-2 walk-off victory after trailing entering the eighth inning. The win showed the toughness and composure that has become a trademark of this Cougar squad during conference play.
Jackson Rosenthal played hero offensively, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including the game-tying single in the eighth inning. Ethan Beede added two doubles and scored the winning run in the ninth, while Mason Montoya and Sam Moore continued to produce quality at-bats throughout the game. Lassen finished with 10 hits and consistently pressured Redwoods pitching late.
On the mound, Ben Lukens turned in another strong outing, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out four. Trent Bailey kept Lassen within striking distance before Kyson Goates slammed the door in the ninth to earn the victory. The Cougar bullpen once again proved dependable in high-pressure moments.
The game-winning run came in the bottom of the ninth when Jack Zimmerman reached on an error, allowing Beede to score and ignite the Cougar dugout. It was another example of Lassen refusing to quit, finding ways to win close games through relentless pressure and disciplined baseball.
Game 3: Cougar Offense Erupts in 17-5 Blowout
Lassen completed the series sweep in emphatic fashion on March 28, overpowering Redwoods 17-5 behind a massive 22-hit offensive explosion. Nearly every Cougar in the lineup contributed as Lassen scored in six different innings and buried Redwoods early with relentless pressure at the plate.
Sam Moore stayed red hot, launching a two-run homer in the first inning while driving in two more runs later in the game. Jackson Rosenthal added a three-run performance that included a home run, while Caden Fowler collected three hits and two RBIs. Roque Serrano reached base repeatedly, finishing with three hits, three runs scored, and two doubles in one of his best games of the season.
The offensive depth was overwhelming. Jack Zimmerman scored twice and drove in a run, Mason Montoya added two RBIs, and Ethan Beede, Hayden Pietras, and Jason Borzello all contributed run-scoring hits. Lassen piled up extra-base hits throughout the afternoon and constantly pressured Redwoods defensively, forcing three errors.
Evan Rhoden set the tone on the mound with five shutout innings and seven strikeouts, allowing just one hit. The Cougar pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts overall, while the offense continued to pour on runs late to complete the dominant series sweep. By the end of the weekend, Lassen had made a loud statement: the Cougars are playing some of their best baseball at exactly the right time.
