Cougars Win 3 of 4 on the Road, Highlighted by a 16-Inning Gut-Check and Another Explosive Offensive Weekend
The Lassen College baseball team battled through an emotional and competitive weekend against Butte, highlighted by a long-awaited home opener at Memorial Park. After uncertainty surrounding the facility following last summer’s grandstand fire, the Cougars finally returned home in front of their community, making the moment bigger than just baseball.
Across three games, Lassen showed resilience, offensive firepower, and fight—earning a split in the series while proving they can compete in tight, high-pressure situations. From late-inning rallies to dominant road performances, the weekend told the story of a team continuing to grow.
Rally Falls Just Short in Emotional Home Opener, 8–7 Loss
Lassen’s home opener carried added significance as the Cougars took the field at Memorial Park for the first time since last summer’s grandstand fire put the season’s hosting plans in doubt. Despite the uncertainty leading up to the moment, Lassen delivered a gritty performance that nearly turned into a memorable comeback win.
The Cougars jumped out early, capitalizing on Butte's mistakes and timely hitting to take a 2–0 lead in the second inning. Damico Parker delivered the key swing with a two-RBI single, while Roque Serrano and Ethan Beede set the table with aggressive base running. Lassen added another run in the fifth to extend the lead to 3–1, with Sam Moore continuing his strong day at the plate.
Starting pitcher Kyson Goates set the tone early, holding Butte to just two hits through four innings while striking out four. The bullpen kept things under control until the seventh inning, when Butte erupted for seven runs—taking advantage of hit batters, timely extra-base hits, and defensive miscues to flip the game.
Down 8–3 in the ninth, Lassen refused to fold. The Cougars strung together quality at-bats, highlighted by RBI hits from Moore and Caden Fowler, and a sacrifice fly from Jackson Rosenthal. With the tying run on base, the rally ultimately fell just short, but the fight shown in the final inning set the tone for the rest of the series.
Cougars Respond with Complete Team Win, 11–3 Victory
Lassen wasted no time bouncing back, delivering one of their most complete performances of the season in an 11–3 win on the road. The Cougars combined timely hitting, aggressive base running, and strong pitching to take control early and never look back.
A four-run second inning sparked the offense, with Kylan Kono delivering a two-RBI double to break things open. Lassen continued to apply pressure throughout the game, consistently putting runners on base and capitalizing on Butte’s defensive mistakes. Contributions came from across the lineup, including Roque Serrano, Ethan Beede, and Caden Fowler.
On the mound, Evan Rhoden provided a steady presence, going 5.2 innings and allowing just one run while keeping Butte off balance. The bullpen duo of Noah Kimura and Thomas Jensen closed the game effectively, limiting any chance of a comeback.
The Cougars’ ability to respond after a tough loss showcased their maturity and resilience. With production up and down the lineup and clean execution in key moments, Lassen controlled every phase of the game to even the series.
Extra-Inning Battle Slips Away, 8–7 in 11 Innings
The series finale turned into a back-and-forth battle that extended into extra innings, with both teams trading momentum swings throughout the game. Lassen showed resilience once again, battling back from a five-run deficit to force extra innings.
After falling behind 6–1, the Cougars exploded in the sixth inning behind home runs from Damico Parker and Ethan Beede. Beede’s three-run shot tied the game, while Kylan Kono added an RBI single to cap a five-run inning that shifted all momentum to Lassen.
Both teams traded scoreless frames late, with strong relief pitching keeping the game deadlocked. Lassen took a 7–6 lead in the 11th inning on a Kono RBI, putting the Cougars in position to secure the series win.
Butte answered in the bottom half, capitalizing on a sacrifice fly and a defensive miscue to walk it off. Despite the loss, Lassen’s ability to respond to adversity and compete deep into extra innings highlighted the toughness and competitiveness of the group.
