Lassen College Men’s Basketball Picks Up First Win of the Season Against Simpson JV

Final Score: Lassen 72, Simpson JV 60

Lassen came out firing, scoring 43 first-half points to take control early. The Cougars attacked the basket with aggression, controlled the boards, and moved the ball with confidence, resulting in a 16-point halftime lead. Although Simpson JV battled back in the second half, Lassen maintained their composure and closed out the game efficiently.

The Cougars shot 47.6% from the field, a season-best to date, and out-rebounded the visitors 41–0 (Simpson JV stats were unavailable but did not record any). While the three-point shooting (4-of-17) was inconsistent, Lassen’s inside scoring and second-chance points provided enough offensive firepower to secure the win.

DeCarlo Browne Dominates Inside

Sophomore forward DeCarlo Browne was nearly unstoppable in the paint, finishing with 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting while also grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. His efficiency and presence on the boards were the backbone of Lassen’s performance, earning him player of the game honors.

McKay Robert also had a strong night, scoring 13 points and pulling down four rebounds, while Malachi Green added 12 points, including three made three-pointers. The trio of Browne, Robert, and Green carried the offensive load, combining for 50 of Lassen’s 72 points.

The Cougars benefited from meaningful contributions across the roster. Jeremiah Collins chipped in with 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists, showing leadership and control at the guard spot. Jailen Childress and Vincent Dame each added 4 and 6 points, respectively, while keeping the offense moving in transition.

Bench Contributions and Defensive Pressure Pay Off

Lassen’s defensive intensity improved dramatically in this game, as they forced 12 steals and turned Simpson’s miscues into points. Guards Sam Hogmalm and Jeremiah Collins were particularly active, combining for 5 steals, while the team collectively caused disruption and applied consistent pressure on the perimeter.

Although the Cougars turned the ball over 19 times themselves, their defensive energy helped neutralize Simpson’s runs and preserve the lead. On the other end, Lassen showed poise at the free-throw line, hitting 8-of-10 attempts (80%), another season-best, reflecting improved focus and execution.

The bench also provided valuable minutes, with Destiny Teah, Isaiah Lassiter, and Roy Guerrero helping give the starters rest while maintaining defensive integrity. While their scoring contributions were limited, the energy and hustle helped sustain Lassen’s tempo.

Building Momentum for What’s Next

The victory over Simpson JV marks a turning point for the Cougars early in the season. After back-to-back losses, Lassen showcased the ability to respond with discipline, execution, and hunger. With Browne emerging as a dominant post presence and the supporting cast continuing to settle into their roles, this team is beginning to find its identity.

The improvement in field goal percentage, rebounding dominance, and free-throw shooting are all signs that the coaching staff’s adjustments are taking hold. If the Cougars can tighten up their ball control and improve consistency from the three-point line, they’ll be in a strong position heading into the next stretch of non-conference play.
