Lassen Defeats Mendocino 5-2 Behind Wood’s Complete Game
Lassen College earned a 5-2 victory over Mendocino on March 21, powered by a strong performance from pitcher Andie Wood and a key offensive spark from Nadia Velazquez. Wood threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out three. The Cougars took control in the third inning and never looked back, securing their second conference win of the season.
Mendocino struck first with a run in the opening inning when Kerrigan Nevill reached on a walk and later scored on a fielder’s choice. Lassen responded in the third, as Velazquez drove in two runs with a double to put the Cougars ahead 2-1. They extended their lead in the fourth with a three-run surge, highlighted by an RBI triple from Wood and aggressive baserunning that forced defensive miscues from the Eagles.
Lassen’s offense finished with eight hits, led by Velazquez, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Wood also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-3, while Cambree Prescott and Shea Jones each added hits to keep the pressure on Mendocino’s pitching. The Eagles had five hits, with AJ Avelar leading the way with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double.
Defensively, Lassen committed two errors but limited the damage with strong pitching and timely outs. Mendocino added a late run in the seventh, but Wood shut the door to seal the win. The Cougars will look to build on this momentum as they continue their conference schedule.
