Cougars Compete in Tight Road Battles Before Weather Cuts Weekend Short

Lassen Softball faced a challenging road weekend, dropping two close games at Hartnell on Friday before falling to Taft on Saturday. A scheduled matchup against Monterey Peninsula College was cancelled due to weather, cutting the trip short. Despite the results, the Cougars showed competitive stretches and individual performances that continue to build momentum as the season progresses.

Game 1: Hartnell 4, Lassen 1 (Feb. 27)

Lassen struck first in the opening inning when Tristyn Lenz drove in the Cougars’ lone run with an RBI double. Early on, it looked like the Cougars might control the tempo, but Hartnell responded with a three-run third inning that flipped the game.

Lenz finished 2-for-3 and provided the most consistent offense of the day. Jenna Ku and Taylor Lauritsen each added a hit as Lassen totaled four on the afternoon. However, Hartnell’s Mikayla Sanchez proved tough in the circle, striking out 10 and limiting Lassen’s ability to string together rallies.

In the circle, Lauren Emery battled through six innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs while striking out three. The Cougars played clean defensively with no errors, but Hartnell capitalized on timely extra-base hits to create separation.

Despite the loss, the Cougars showed discipline early and defensive steadiness throughout. The difference came in one big inning and Hartnell’s ability to control the strike zone late.

Game 2: Hartnell 3, Lassen 2 (Feb. 27)

Game two was a tight, one-run battle that came down to a handful of key plays. Lassen broke through in the fourth and sixth innings, but Hartnell answered in the fifth and held off a late Cougar push.

Emma Wayas delivered the biggest swing for Lassen with a two-RBI hit, accounting for both Cougar runs. Tristyn Lenz doubled again and scored, continuing her strong day at the plate. The Cougars finished with six hits and applied steady pressure against multiple Hartnell pitchers.

Abby Lynn turned in a competitive outing in the circle, throwing six innings and allowing three runs (two earned). She kept Lassen within reach all afternoon, mixing speeds effectively and working through traffic.

Ultimately, defensive miscues and missed opportunities with runners on base proved costly. Still, the Cougars were within striking distance until the final out, showing the fight needed as they move deeper into the season.

Game 3: Taft 8, Lassen 1 (Feb. 28)

On Saturday, Lassen faced a hot Taft lineup that produced 14 hits and multiple extra-base knocks. Taft jumped out early and added on in the middle innings, creating a gap the Cougars couldn’t close.

The highlight for Lassen came from Jhan’z Kaawa-Kawai, who launched a solo home run and drove in the team’s only run of the game. Zoey Heffelfinger doubled, and Tristyn Lenz added another hit as the Cougars collected four total.

In the circle, Ramona Ryder got the start before Lauren Emery worked 6.2 innings in relief. Emery limited further damage after the early deficit, but Taft’s extra-base power—including two home runs—made the difference.

While the final score favored Taft, the Cougars continued to compete and flash individual offensive moments. With conference play looming, the focus will be on tightening defensive details and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
