Lassen Women's Basketball: A Gritty Opening Weekend with Progress and Promise

Game 1: Lassen vs. Merced — Opening Night Fight, Final Score: Merced 70, Lassen 49

Lassen opened their season with a competitive first half against Merced, taking a narrow 30–24 lead into halftime after a strong second quarter. The Cougars showed energy and effort early, but struggled to maintain momentum as Merced's offense surged in the third quarter, scoring 25 points and pulling away for a 70–49 win.

Despite the loss, several players had strong showings. Kyleigh Flux led the team with 11 points, hitting three of her five three-point attempts in an efficient performance. Mallory Thompson brought physicality to the court, grabbing nine rebounds and scoring nine points. The Cougars’ defense was disruptive at times, forcing 20 turnovers and collecting 11 steals—highlighting their aggressive, pressing style.

The challenge for Lassen came on the offensive end. The team shot just 27.9% from the field and only 30.8% from the free-throw line. Their 7-for-32 mark from beyond the arc reflected early-season rust and some rushed shot selection. Still, the effort on defense and rebounding (36 total boards) gave the coaching staff something to build on.

While the score may not have reflected it, this game served as an important test against a polished Merced team. With contributions from nearly every rotation player, including Rihana Fontenot and Alizah Lara off the bench, the opener provided valuable experience and showed that Lassen has the pieces to be competitive once they clean up their execution.

Game 2: Lassen vs. Taft — A Tough Test Against a Hot-Handed Opponent, Final Score: Taft 97, Lassen 55

Lassen’s second game of the weekend brought them face-to-face with an explosive Taft squad that came into the contest undefeated. The Cougars struggled early, giving up 32 points in the first quarter and 30 more in the second, trailing by a daunting 62–19 at halftime. While the team responded with a strong third quarter, outscoring Taft 24–22, the early deficit proved too large to overcome.

Despite the lopsided score, Lassen had bright spots. Freshman guard Kyleigh Flux continued to shine, leading all Cougar scorers with 17 points on an efficient 6-of-10 shooting. Claudia Garcia-Juarez also had a solid showing with eight points and four assists, displaying improved decision-making and leadership at the point. The team shot a respectable 38.2% from the field and an encouraging 72.7% from the free-throw line—an improvement from the Merced game.

Turnovers remained a concern for the Cougars, committing 27 on the day. Taft capitalized on those mistakes with a fast-paced transition game, which was difficult for Lassen to contain. Defensively, Lassen struggled to slow down Taft’s balanced attack, which featured six players in double figures and a dominant 54–27 rebounding edge.

Still, the second-half effort showed character. The Cougars played with renewed energy and composure, especially in the third quarter where they executed their offense more effectively and made defensive adjustments. This game, while difficult, will likely be one of the most valuable learning experiences of the season—teaching the young team what it takes to compete against elite opposition.

Game 3: Lassen vs. Porterville — A Statement Win and Turning Point, Final Score: Lassen 59, Porterville 37

Lassen’s third game in three days proved to be their most complete performance yet. In a gritty, hard-fought matchup against host Porterville, the Cougars secured their first win of the season with a commanding 59–37 victory. The defense set the tone early and maintained control throughout, allowing just six points in the final quarter to put the game away.

Sophomore guard Alizah Lara delivered a breakout performance, scoring 24 points on 11-of-25 shooting while adding six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Lara’s shot creation and ability to push the pace were critical, as Lassen struggled from deep (6-of-30 from three) but capitalized on second-chance opportunities and strong interior play. Claudia Garcia-Juarez had her best all-around game of the weekend, finishing with nine points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.

Lassen dominated the glass, out-rebounding Porterville 49–47 and grabbing 24 offensive boards. Kyleigh Flux contributed another double-digit rebounding effort with 10 boards to go along with five points, while Nisa Rodriguez added 10 points and four assists. Despite shooting just 28.4% from the field, Lassen’s aggressiveness and defensive pressure made the difference—they forced 35 Porterville turnovers and scored key transition buckets down the stretch.

This win was not only a much-needed morale booster but also a sign that the Cougars are beginning to gel. The defensive effort was relentless, the hustle was contagious, and the bench energy reflected a team hungry to improve. After a rough start to the weekend, Lassen ended on a high note—setting the stage for more competitive games ahead as confidence continues to grow.
