Cougars Push Cuesta to the Limit in Season-Opening Five-Set Thriller

The Lassen College women’s volleyball team opened their 2025 season with an intense five-set battle against Cuesta College on August 22 in Monterey, CA. Despite falling 3–2 (22–25, 26–24, 18–25, 25–22, 12–15), the Cougars left it all on the court in a gritty performance that showcased their competitive spirit and potential for the season ahead.

Freshman Vanessa Lott led the offensive attack with 9 kills on 20 attempts, while sophomore Mackenzee Sills added 8 kills and 4 digs in a strong all-around showing. Olive Chandler was consistent at the net, contributing 7 kills with a .238 hitting percentage. Setter Lucy Platz played a critical role, leading the team with 16 assists, 11 digs, and 6 service aces. Meleny Medina also had a standout performance with 10 assists and 6 aces of her own.

Defensively, the Cougars showed plenty of hustle. Libero Pacey Harris anchored the back row with 23 digs, helping Lassen stay in long rallies and slow down Cuesta’s offense. In total, the Cougars finished with 60 digs, 13 service aces, and 30 kills on the night. While the team hit just .008 overall, their strong serving and backcourt defense kept them competitive throughout the match.

Though the Cougars came up short in the final frame, the match proved they can hang with tough opponents early in the season. With promising chemistry already on display and contributions coming from all areas of the roster, Lassen fans have plenty to look forward to as the team continues its non-conference schedule.
