Lassen Volleyball Takes Modesto to Five, Falls Just Short in Thriller
In their second match of the day, Lassen College pushed Modesto Junior College to the brink in a gritty five-set battle, ultimately falling 3-2 (12-25, 25-21, 25-13, 14-25, 12-15) on September 12 at Cosumnes River. The Cougars showed heart, rallying after a slow start and capturing sets two and three, but couldn’t hold off a late surge by the Pirates.
Freshman standout Olive Chandler led the way once again for Lassen with 13 kills on 40 swings, while Mackenzee Sills added 12 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Setter Makala Crosno played a key role in running the offense, tallying 14 assists and three service aces. Pacey Harris anchored the back row with an incredible 32 digs, her highest total of the season.
The Cougars served aggressively, collecting 14 aces as a team and recording 103 digs in a match that showcased Lassen’s defensive grit. Abigail Lynn contributed three kills and two block assists, while Betty Kay Overcash and Vanessa Lott combined for nine kills in the front row. Though Lassen hit just .089 overall, their hustle and serving kept them competitive throughout.
With the loss, Lassen drops to 5–10 overall, but continues to show flashes of potential and growing cohesion. The team will look to build on the energy and execution seen in sets two and three as they prepare for a critical stretch of the season.
